Miniscrew-supported distal jet versus conventional distal jet appliance: A pilot study
2019
Background Maxillary molar distalization is the most frequently used nonextraction treatment in the correction of Class II malocclusion. The use of traditional intra-oral devices shows unreliable results. Nowadays the use of miniscrew-supported appliances helps prevent anchorage loss. The aim of this pilot study is to compare the amount of upper first molar distalization and the dentoalveolar side effects using traditional distal jet appliance and miniscrew-supported distal jet appliance. Material and methods 20 patients were randomly assigned to receive a treatment with miniscrew-supported distal jet appliance (Group A) or with traditional distal jet appliance (Group B). To ensure a safe a…
Abscess of the orbit arising 48 h after root canal treatment of a maxillary first molar
2006
Aim To discuss a rare, but severe complication arising following routine root canal treatment. Summary An orbital abscess is reported that occurred following routine root canal treatment. A young, healthy female patient, with no history of chronic paranasal infection had undergone root canal treatment of the right maxillary first molar. On hospital admission, she presented with extensive periorbital swelling and discreet diplopia. Computed tomography imaging identified massive purulent sinusitis and subsequent involvement of the orbit via the inferior and medial orbital wall within 48 h after completion of root canal treatment. Immediate surgical drainage of the maxillary sinus and the or…
The use of spiral CT in the detection and management of a permanent maxillary first molar with single root and single canal : a rare occurrence
2017
A sound knowledge of the normal tooth morphology and its numerous variations is essential to the success of endodontic therapy. While extra canals and lateral canals are routinely encountered and documented, there also exists the rare possibility of a fewer number of canals than normal. Early detection of such an occurrence is critical to the prevention of iatrogenic errors during endodontic treatment. The advent of spiral CT as a diagnostic tool serves as a much needed confirmation to understand the complex three dimensional anatomy of teeth. The aim of this case report is to highlight one such case reporting unusual morphology of the permanent maxillary first molar displaying single canal…
Maxillary first molar with three mesiobuccal canals confirmed with spiral computer tomography
2012
Anatomic variations in root canal morphology have become easier to detect with the rapid advancements in clinical and diagnostic aids. Also an increased awareness of unusual anatomic morphology and a better understanding of the root canal system guides the clinician in diagnosis and treatment of such variations in order to achieve a successful endodontic outcome. Mesiobuccal root of first maxillary molar teeth have been considered to be one of the most complex and challenging root canal systems. This case report presents a successful management of a third canal in the mesiobuccal root of permanent maxillary first molar using dental operating microscope along with a modified access preparati…
Tomographic evaluation of infrazygomatic crest for orthodontic anchorage in different vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns
2020
Background Analysis of the anatomy of the region during preoperative planning is very important in order to minimize the risks of undesired movements in the supporting teeth or even damage to important structures such as the maxillary sinus. To the best of our knowledge, no study evaluated the relationship of these skeletal patterns with the anatomy of the infrazygomatic crest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tomographic measurements of the infrazygomatic crest for placement of temporary anchorage devices in individuals with different vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns. Material and methods The measurements were analyzed in three regions in the crest of 67 patients above the …
Root Canal Morphology and Configuration of 179 Maxillary First Molars by Means of Micro-computed Tomography: An Ex Vivo Study
2015
Introduction The objective of this study was to propose a root canal configuration description method and to investigate the root canal system morphology of the maxillary first molar by means of micro-computed tomographic imaging. Methods The root canal configuration, foramina, and accessory canal frequency of 179 maxillary first molars were investigated by means of micro-computed tomographic imaging and 3-dimensional software imaging. The root canal configuration and main foramina number are described from coronal to apical with a 4-digit system. Results The most frequent root canal configurations were 1-1-1/1 (45.8%), 2-2-2/2 (25.1%) and 2-2-1/1 (10.1%) in mesiobuccal roots and 1-1-1/1 in…
Experimental models of orthodontic tooth movement and their effects on periodontal tissues remodelling.
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T08:31:31Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-10-01 Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) Objectives: The present study aimed to compare two different models of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats by evaluating tooth movement efficiency and periodontal tissues remodelling. Design: Fifteen animals were randomly distributed into 3 groups: control group (untreated); ligature appliance (LA) as experimental OTM using a closed coil spring fixed around maxillary first molar by steel ligature; occlusal appliance (OA) as experimental OTM using a closed coil spring attached on the occlusal surface of the maxillary f…
Management of a permanent maxillary first molar with two disto buccal canals with the aid of spiral computed tomography: a case report
2010
Human molars show considerable anatomic variations with respect to number of roots and root canals. The most common form of the permanent maxillary first molar has three roots and four canals, two mesiobuccal canals and one distobuccal and palatal canal each. 98.3% of maxillary first molar have been reported to have a single distobuccal canal. Two canals were found only 1.7% of the time, hence showing the second disto buccal canal to being a rare occurrence. Conventionally radiographs are used to determine root canal anatomy, which is a 2- dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional object. Diagnostic methods like spiral computerized tomography where a 3 dimensional data is acquired are u…
A novel trephine design for sinus lift lateral approach. Case report
2010
Various techniques are described in the literature, either by crestal or lateral approach. Sinus augmentation has a high percentage of success, but presents a number of intraoperative and postoperative complications. The most frequent complication is the Schneiderian membrane perforation with a percentage of perforations between 11% and 56% according to authors. The aim of this study is to describe another membrane approach technique for the sinus lateral wall osteotomy that minimizes the risk of Schneiderian membrane perforation. We present a case of a 50 year old patient attended the University Dental Clinic (UDC) of International University of Catalonia for implant and crown treatment du…
